anyone with a job anyway. Atleast its not VC funded… and the other companies the founder launched seem to make more sense…i think!

UBL’s credit cards : Worst IT system AND Service Ever (aka dont get one)

Uncategorized 2 Comments

(disclainer:This is not a pure IT post but its related, and it is affected by tons of frustration due to the rude+inefficient staff at the UBL call center )

To all my readers and friends : Do not get the UBL credit card. If they call you, slam the phone down, please. its for your own good, really. This is worse than Standard Chartered’s credit card. And thats bad. The IT systems suck anyway but the customer service is worse, so I dont even think the best IT system would be of any use.  Read the rest of this entry »

Lal Masjid website gets shutdown…

Uncategorized No Comments

Following the events of the Islamabad based Lal masjid militants showdown against the government, the lalmasjid.com website has been blocked by the authorities. But, its still accessible outside of the country! My request to geeks/coders/gurus/hackers : Please please do a DOS attack or bring this website down some other way. The people who run this website kidnap innocent people, burn buildings and run an illegal court where they give fatwas to destroy anything they dont like.

If this site was hosted somewhere besides Pakistan its easy enough for the government to send a legal notice to the ISP/hoster (you can always use tools to check up the IP of the website) asking them to stop hosting materials that incite hatred and intolerance.

Here comes Mohtashim’s TechIndex

Uncategorized 1 Comment

So I have resolved to start profiling and gathering as much data on Pakistani IT companies as I can in one place, my blog. I have introduced a new category “Mohtashim’s TechIndex” and starting this week I’ll start adding companies. You will also notice a new page on top titled “Company Index” which will link to a list for the same. Again, as always, this is stuff done on my time, with insight gained from various sources in the Industry, and hence is my, independant view of things. Hope you guys find it useful.

Also, one more thing. For a ‘real’ research paper on the Industry, you can call up PASHA (pasha.org) and ask them what is happening on that front. I believe there is a new study in the works on the industry, that builds on and updates the last, now obsolete one.

Dude…Have you lost it???

I think Mr Zamir Haider is having a sort of culture shock of a first time US - living experience. Having studied, lived and worked in the US for 6 odd years I can understand if he is going through such an experience. But even then, he apparently doesnt seem to know many people in his town of Islamabad, since he actually seems to think people in Pakistan dont use iPods…And he thinks his fellow countrymen are backward when it comes to tech. I apologize in advance for the rhetoric that follows but his CNET article has just pissed me off big time. OK, so parts of what he says is true , but really, come on, Mr Zamir, you really need to re-examine the approach to your first ever cnet article. You dont have to put Pakistan down to make SF look good, I mean, really. tut tut. Also, for Mr Haiders reference, we do have monthly plans (financing) on almost all kids of tech stuff, not just cars.

Link to his article is below:

Now, the following is for anyone who keeps griping about how we dont have tech in this country : We have 3 Apple stores here, with everything from Apple. And we are all waiting for the iPhone just like most people are in SF. Read the rest of this entry »
