The next big thing in Open Source is coming out of Karachi…

I have long held that given how easy it is now to build software (take a look at basecamp.com, 4 people, million dollar revenue) it is as likely for a ground breaking killer app to come out of Karachi or Lahore as  California. Not as easy mind you, but as likely.

And Zivios just might prove me right. Faraz Khan and the good people at Emergen have been busy working on a next generation Active Directly killer for the last several months and in 4 days it should finally be out for beta. And its open source. And They are giving it away. Nothing better to build popularity!

For a long time, the Linux/Unix world has arguably been as good or better than Microsoft enterprise tools for managing large IT infrastructures. This means giving users logins, managing software and hardware inventories, backups, and the like. The important stuff. The problem though is that linux/open source tools are so notoriously difficult to use and understand, most firms would rather pay for MS tools and the support than deal with “free but complex”.  This is the problem Zivios aims to fix. As a web panel, it should make standard IT enterprise management operations as easy or easier than Active directory in Windows.
