So i heard this on the radio the other day. Windows Vista starter edition is retailing in Pakistan for Rs 2,600. Not bad, bravo Microsoft, now instead of a one time promotion, why dont you just make this the standard price for your OS? You will kill 70% of Windows OS piracy with one blow, which probably is the aim anyway. And if you make it cheaper for students, (at UT we used to get legal Windows, office and visual studio for USD $5 per CD, no jokes.) then no one will want to go to Rainbow center to buy software CD’s
In the wake of such rampant piracy of software which really has not gone down at all in the last several years at the consumer level, reducing prices to corner the market is really is the only option, and then offering a subscription based upgrade service to hold onto that market share would work…. Most consumers will not buy pirates software if prices of the legal versions are reasonable for them.
Now, oddly, sadly, insanely enough a copy of Windows Vista will cost about as much as a full tank of petrol!!

comparing to a tank of petrol?!!!
Today’s rate for a gallon of gas in Texas around $4.76 for your regular non-leaded kind.

Why waste money buying a genuine Microsoft “ANNOYANCE”. I guess global studies show that people are often very reluctant to make the switch to vista albeit its fancy cosmetic appeal to the onlooker.
One reason why microsoft pushed Windows XP to be a end of life product and asked hardware vendors to stop shipping pre-loaded XP boxes.
The reason is simple…vista aint gaining all that usability appeal from the masses which was expected out of it..
And for the detailed reasons…try googling for why not to use vista , you will find a dime a dozen.

come now, lets not give into popular opinion blindly now…

Well not blindly yaar, infact have tried and did use Windows Vista for quite a while at my home PC, while trying out SUSe Linux at the same time. Vista somehow gave me a binded and bounded feeling again and again.
The concept of a simple and intuitive GUI is buried in cosmetic hypervisors (Windows Se7en) like interfaces which almost makes us feel so futuristic , but at the same time the freedom to experiment around in XP was missing a great deal. Limited hardware and software support, too many tweaks to find out before you feel like a power user and UAC blocking the way like a traffic police UNDA all the time…well maybe these are just my opinions. People may find it suitable for their usage.
At least i had to switch back to windows to enjoy all the not-so-mainstream utilities and applications i use on a daily basis.

For us geeks, linux will always rule.
…but for the other 5.9 billion people though all they want is a easy to use computer, which is the feeling MAC ads prey on. for my business laptop, i’ve been using vista flawlessly for months. I loved the powerful (better than google desktop?) search feature…. ofcourse for a development laptop i would use a MAC running php/apache. or linux doing the same.
