Sun buys mySQL for a billion USD, changes tech landscape forever

Business Tech Add comments

Sun (Java, Solaris, etc ) just bought its ticket back from the dead. And for what seems to be a bargain price , just about a billion dollars USD. Now, with the J2EE stack, mySQL and hardware Sun has a complete stack to offer for end to end enterprise solutions and can be taken seriously again as a player (eventually) and not just as a low cost hardware supplier. The more they integrate this architecture tightly, the more competitive the offering becomes… Java, mySQL on Solaris or Linux.

I have to stay I’m pretty impressed, this also puts Sun in direct competition with Microsoft’s architecture and Oracle’s database. Not that they werent before but this changes the tech landscape outright. I’m pretty sure Oracle and maybe IBM were also in the running. Oracle recently bought Weblogic, and earlier IBM bought Cognos, but those are so , ho hum, compared to this development. Expect more consolidation and more “next gen” startups.
