I think its time to go and get this. Or a WiMax card for my laptop
atleast…A few days ago, Wateen launched the largest WiMax network in the world in Pakistan.
The event was covered in everything from Engadget (one of the most popular blogs on the net) to local blogs here (State of telecom) and here(techlahore).
I will keep this post updated as reviews of the service pour in or I get to try it myself…
And below is a live video feed of geeks rejoicing news of the new fast broadband service when they should be working:

Have been using the service for a week now. Haven’t experienced any issues to date (Service down times/limited connectivity/dropped signals etc).
The process was easy enough; went to the Wateen franchise, filled out a simple form, cut a cheque, got the Motorola device, plugged it in! no complicated setups required; They supplied a temporary user name/password and after 5 days (call centre leaves a lot to be desired) got a call from Wateen with the permanent id/pwd. Since I can’t get DSL in my office (non copper lines), this has been a Godsend! You get a telephone line too with the connection.
On my request, they let me test the device for a day before i bought it, to test the signal strength in my area (SITE). For an additional charge they can put up an outdoor antenna to augment the signal strength.
Obviously this review is based on a trial period of just a few days. The level of service will only be apparent after a few months of usage with an increased subscriber base so I am cautiously optimistic!. But for people who cannot get or are fed up with DSL due to the creaky phone lines, this is certainly worth a try!

yeah for the SITE and Korangi Industrial areas of Karachi this should work out very well. I know for a fact that you guys do NOT have decent phone lines and need site to site antennas (super expensive) and cable isnt available either. basically getting broadband now in these areas will be super easy! YAY for wateen!

I am a PTCL DSL subscriber in Metroville, SITE area. It was my mistake that I subscribed to it
as my phone is dead for about one week to two weeks in a month. I have been bearing this service from the last 5 months. Our new exchange at Metroville has started working but my phone # is still associated with Orangi Exchange as Metroville Exchange doesn’t have DSL.
Now I want to discontinue with PTCL (both their telephony and DSL service), but am thinking if it would be a good idea to switch to wateen for telephony and broadband in my area?
Would anyone recommend that?
Thanks.

doesnt seem like such a bad idea to try out wateen given that your PTCL experience sounds quite horrible…
