SAP seems to once again making a push further into Pakistan. It is looking for
people to hire, and for business partners (resellers and system integrators). Its been all over the informal newswire and SAP has been giving out large ads in the papers going “we’re hiring!!”. If you’re a lowly paid or out of work SAP consultant in the US, time to move back here…
Pakistan,India, China and the ME region are a hot market for ERPs, and possibly the last “real, large” market for enterprise ERP systems.
SAP currently is installed at over 20 of the largest companies in Pakistan, with the customer list including the likes of PSO, Indus Motors, KESC, etc
Oracle isn’t sitting on the sidelines either, they have closed quite a few projects through several system integrators in the country in the last 8 months. With their acquisition of iFLEX, a core banking suite they are also now wading into the banking sector in Pakistan, much to the annoyance of IBM+Misys.
All this while Microsoft’s Dynamics (Their ERP suite : GP, Solomon, etc ) initiatives look as cold as an uncooked kettle of fish, as usual. I guess the regular licensing and ISV sales are more than making up for it, as usual ![]()

Those ads looked real juicy. Actually, SAP is gaining a lot of momentum. Things were a little off & on, but suddenly you are hearing news from all the direction. HP bought Atos ME and guess what, the acquisition is complete as reported. There are many local projects in the pipeline, i’ve met people who are waiting for them to happen.
And oh yes! you are 100% right, its time for the team to get back home do some netweaving here.

Well,
Working with the largest and the first SAP VAR (Value Added Reseller) and System Implementers for a substantial period of time, its really refreshing to see the awakening on the verge, and maybe new oppurtunities around the block. The pipeline to materialization time is also on a bullish trend, at least till now after the emergency.
8 years down the memory lane, not much of the ‘IT Savvy’ masses knew about what this ‘SAP’ acronym (or abbreviation whatever you may call) stands for. Maybe standard ERP solutions were the domain of few (Caltex, Duestche Bank etc), compared with customized solution development. However as the number of clients and implementations increased over time (local and multinationals), this buzzword became more heard of. SAP Academy has also been churning out resources who, if not getting a $100/Hour Job (as quoted by an IDC survey in Computer World Fortnightly), are somehow consumed in the local scenario (since there are around 3 system implementers offering SAP services now).
A trend to my amusement is the influx of fresh graduates and people experienced in various professional backgrounds now heading for SAP Trainings, I have met Doctors - Engineers - Bankers already calling themselves SAP ‘Consultants’, i fear the day Lawyers would head for it too.
Just pointing to the fact that SAP demands adequate business knowledge to augument the technical skillset, which if not already possessed can be acquired via quite some hard work.
The SAP community/employers here and abroad obvisouly would be at discomfort to see SAP morphing in a contagious epidemic named ‘MCSE’ which swept the masses (whether present in the MCSE test or absent, they got certified) across Pakistan just a few years back, to whom the word ‘WAN’ was some miniwagon on a route from Sohrab Goth to Tower :-).
Peace and Cheers for all.

Arshad,
I’ve been in BI for the past 4 years in US. Now, I’ve also been looking for BI opportunities in Pak, but unfortunately have not found much.
Abacus seems to be the ones giving me some hope. It’s a very contrasting market here as compared to the established market in US.
I personally enjoy BI alos as I’ve also been teaching it for 2 years. Please let me know if you find anything on it.
Thanks.

Farhan, BI here is very new and still limited overall..primarily because alot of the data is yet to be moved into databases and digital formats…expect BI to grow very fast in the next 4-5 years so you may already have an inherent skill you can leverage. Talk to the other SI companies too, ie Inbox, Si3,NCR and IBM services. i think your skill would be in high demand locally in PK in a year or two…
