As per the news pouring in, hardware sales of PC’s are up by a modest 5.4-6% this year to date, inspite of a crippling 15% gst tax that still hangs over everyone’s head. Server sales are robust but not much higher than last year. Hardware is still the largest $$$ chunk of the overall IT market in Pakistan, just as IDC predicted in 2006 we will remain a hardware oriented market for the next few years atleast. Laptop sales are growing fast, especially since prices are dropping and given the horrendous KESC situation in Karachi atleast, more consumers seem to now opt to purchase a laptop for the home over a desktop.

If you were thinking this means that opening up a hardware shop is a good idea today, think again. This doesn’t mean that there is alot of money to be made here anymore. With lower margins, larger volumes have become a necessity putting the market in favour of the bigger players, such as Inbox, Raffles, and the MNC brands.
