SatNav ie GPS (finally) comes to Pakistan

Many have talked about it, but no one really put in the money and effort to build something like this. Now, thanks to Trakker , for a whopping 95,000 rupees (95k only baba only), you could get into the “techie cool” club of those few who have a somewhat working GPS based nav system in their cars, as opposed to those non-working japanese-error displaying screens that you might oddly think of as cool in your newly imported Vitz ;) Will this really help me get from Golee Maar to my oddly located house, say in PECHS? well chances are it..might.

On a more serious note though, from what I have heard from users (I have not used this system yet) , if you can select your current location and destination from a street list (who knows street names in karachi?!) it will get you to your desired location. There are still some kinks to work out but it does have an extensive database of landmarks which should come in useful. Not sure about the “live assistant” idea though. Trakker is the right company to build this product though. They have the domain knowledge (tracking cars is their core business) and they have the most extensive road map database in Pakistan, presumably that is what has been used for the nav system. Now all Suzuki/Honda and Toyota have to do is offer this as an option on their higher end models, that would really be something.

In-car GPS navigation is not available in Pakistan. Data Solutions (Pvt) Ltd (www.naqsha.net) in partnership with Tracking World (Pvt) Ltd (www.trackingworld.com.pk) have launched Garmin GPS units loaded with Pakistan map data. Currently only Garmin GPS units are available for purchase. The units range from in-car dash mounted devices to devices for motorbikes. There is also a unit which can be integrated with the vehicle’s DVD/entertainment unit and displays the navigational information on it. Existing Garmin users also have the option to buy the map for their specific unit. You may view the maps and GPS devices at naqsha.net.

The map has street level detail of major Pakistani cities and all major national highways. Streets are labeled and searchable for Islamabad, Lahore and some parts of Karachi. In addition there are close to 40,000 POIs such as fuel/CNG stations, banks, atms, hospitals, restaurants (categorised), hotels, shops, etc. Most POIs have address and phone number information available as well. Units equipped with FM transmitters and Bluetooth allow hands free dialing from the unit and are able to integrate with the vehicles’s audio system as well.

    Nadir,
Are you saying that the Trakker device has been discontinued or that it is no longer in the market? there used to be huge banners advertising the navigation system ?

  4. Ali Says:

Mohtashim, We can say thay are out of market as Non-Branded system at high price without steet level details had no penitration since bigining.
Now Data Solution and Tracking World have brought Garmin, World Leader in Navigation, prices too low, reliable branded product and have extra features like FM Transmitter, MP3 player, Blue tooth etc. in same hand held device

  5. Mohtashim Says:

…some parts? which parts are not covered? does it cover all of lahore??

  6. Zara Says:

I have a Garmin nuvi 670, on which I have flagged every things and works very accurately. Now few months back CDA chairman (KL) sent me a Nuvi 650 loaded with Islamabad Street maps, to test it as he was not happy with it. Once I started using it side by side with my unit, I was amazed that how inaccurate it was. First of all the roads were around 50 meter off, like if you are travelling on a main road, it might show either you are on green area or a smaller parralel service road. and when you take turns the maps are so heavy that it takes like 10-15 sec to load up in right oriantation. Now if you know the city thats ok, but if you are nevagating using it, then pack for a long trip. I have used the Middle east maps and even a 5 feet round about in a shopping mall is accurately shown. I am sure we wont have that level here but at least have the maps accurately embedded on GPS coordinates.

If that is a beta by trakker, then I sure hope they are not actually charging 95K for it.

I came across free Garmin GPS maps at http://pkmaps.freeforums.org/. For the cities they have already mapped out, it’s more detailed than the Naqsha maps.

  9. Talha Says:

hmm… 95000 is really too expensive. a more reasonable price would be 10,000 - 20,000. I went to lahore and it was a NIGHMARE (i live in abbottabad) and i plan to buy one. but if its going to be that expensive then id rather continue asking rickshaw walas and wouldnt mind getting lost every 15 minutes.

  10. Asad Baig Says:

Tracking world has advertized Car Navigation systems for specific vehicles. I want to know how these maps work on those units as they are not of Garmin brand! Please explain.

    AOA:
I have a reconditioned TOYOTA Corolla 2006 model Car in Karachi with GPS is factory fitted in it. I need to put Karachi maps in it.
How it can be done economically with the latest GPS maps.
If any one would assist, I will be obliged.
    Regards
